XIV. 14:1-16:20 JESUS DECLARES HIMSELF THE FOUNDATION-STONE
A. 14:1-36 CIRCUMSTANCES SHAPING JESUS' MINISTRY
1. 14:1-12 HEROD CONFUSES JESUS WITH JOHN THE BAPTIST
a. 14:1-2 HEROD SEEKS TO UNDERSTAND JESUS

At that :season Herod the tetrarch heard the report about Jesus,

2and said to his :servants, This is John the Baptist;
auTOS eGERtheaPO ton neKRON; kai diA TOUto hai duNAmeis [1411]e-nerGOUsin [1784]en auto.
HE is risen from the dead; and therefore the powers work in him.
b. 14:3 HEROD IMPRISONS JOHN
ho gar HeROdes kraTEsas [2902]ton IoAnen, Ede-sen [1210], kai en phu-laKE[5087]
For :Herod had laid hold on :John, andbound him, and put him
aPEthe-to diA He-ro-diAda, ten guNAIka PhiLIPpou tou a-delPHOU auTOU.
in prison for the sake of Herodias, the wife of Philip his :brother.
c. 14:4 For :John was saying to him It is not lawful for you to have her.

d. 14:5 And he would have slain him, but feared the crowd, because they deemed him a prophet.

e. 14:6 THE DAUGHTER OF HERODIAS

But when :Herod's birthday came,

the daughter of :Herodias danced in the midst, and pleased :Herod.
f. 14:7 Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatever she should ask.

g. 14:8 HERODIAS ASKS FOR HEAD OF JOHN
he de, pro-bi-basTHEIsa [4264] huPO tes meTROS auTES, DOS moi,
And she, put forward by her :mother, says,
pheSIN, HOde ePI PIna-ki [4094] ten ke-phaLEN [2776] IoAnou tou bap-tiSTOU.
Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.
h. 14:9-10 HEROD REGRETFULLY COMPLIES
kai lu-peTHEIS [3076] ho ba-siLEUS, diA tous HORkous,
And the king, grieved for the sake of the oaths,
kai tous su-na-na-keiMEnous [4873], eKEleu-sen [2753] doTHEnai;
and of them that sat at meat with him, commanded itto be given;
kai PEMpsas a-pe-kePHAli-sen [607] IoAnen en te phu-laKE.
10and he sent and beheaded John in the prison.
i. 14:11 JOHN'S HEAD DELIVERED
kai eNECHthe he ke-phaLE auTOU ePI PIna-ki,
And his :head was brought on a platter,
kai eDOthe to ko-raSIo [2877]: kai Eneg-ken te meTRI auTES.
and given to the damsel: and she brought itto her :mother.
j. 14:12 JOHN'S DISCIPLES BURY HIS BODY AND REPORT TO JESUS
kai pro-selTHONtes hoi ma-theTAI auTOU, Eran to PTOma [4983],
And his :disciples came, andtook up the corpse,
kai Etha-psan [2290] auTON kai elTHONtes aPEGgei-lan [518] to IeSOU.
and buried him and went andtold :Jesus.
2. 14:13-21 HEALING AND FEEDING OF THE 5000
a. 14:13 JESUS WITHDRAWS AT THE NEWS
A-KOUsas de ho IeSOUS, a-neCHOresen [402]eKEIthen en PLOIo,
Now when :Jesus heard it, he withdrew from there in a boat,
eis Ere-mon [2048] TOpon kat' iDIan: kai aKOUsan-tes hoi OCHloi,
to a desert place apart: and the crowds heard it,
e-koLOUthe-san auTO peZE[3979]aPO ton POle-on.
andfollowed him on foot from the cities.
b. 14:14 THE COMPASSION OF JESUS FOR THE PEOPLE
kai e-xelTHON, EIden poLUN OCHlon, kai e-splagNISthe [4597] ep' auTOIS,
And he came forth, andsaw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them,
kai e-theRApeu-sen [2323] tou arROstous [732] auTON.
andhealed their :sick.
c. 14:15 THE SOLUTION OF THE DISCIPLES
oPSIas de ge-noMEnes, proSELthan auTO hoi ma-theTAI, LEgon-tes,
And when even was come, the disciples came to him, saying,
EreMOS es-tin ho TOpos, kai he HOra paRELthen [3928]; aPOlu-son [630] tous OCHlous,
The place is desert, and the hour is already past; send the crowds away.
HIna a-pelTHONtes eis tas KOmas, a-goRAso-sin [59] he-auTOIS BROma-ta [1033].
that they may go into the villages, andbuy themselves food.
d. 14:16 But :Jesus said to them, They have no need to go away; YOU give them to eat.

e. 14:17 And they say to him, we have here but five loaves, and two fishes.

f. 14:18 And he said, Bring them here to me. ho de EIpen, PHEreTE moi HOde auTOUS.
g. 14:19 THE SOLUTION OF JESUS
kai keLEUsas [2753] tous OCHlous a-na-kliTHEnai [347] ePI tou CHORtou [5528],
And he commanded the crowds to sit down on the grass,
laBON tous PENte ARtous kai tous DUo ichTHUas, a-naBLEpsas eis ton ou-raNON,
took the five loaves and the two fishes, andlooked up to :heaven,
euLOge-sen [2127] kai KLAsas [2806], Edo-ken tois ma-theTAIS tous ARtous, hoi de ma-theTAI tois OCHlois.
blessed andbroke, and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples to the crowds.
h. 14:20 THE AMAZING LEFT-OVERS

And all ate, and were filled: and they took up

what remained over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full.
i. 14:21 And they that ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

3. 14:22-33 JESUS PRAYS AND WALKS ON WATER
a. 14:22 JESUS SENDS THE DISCIPLES AHEAD
Kai euTHEos aNAGka-sen [315] tous ma-theTAS emBEnai eis PLOIon,
And straightway he constrained the disciples to enter into a boat,
kai proAgein auTON eis to PEran, HEos hou a-poLUse [630] tous OCHlous.
and to go before him unto the other side, till he should send the crowds away.
b. 14:23 JESUS DISPERSES THE CROWD AND PRAYS
kai a-poLUsas tous OCHlous, aNEbe eis to HOros kat' iDIan proSEUxas-thai [4336]:
And having sent the crowds away, he went up into the mountain apart to pray:
oPSIas de ge-noMEnes, MOnos en eKEI.
and when even was come, he was there alone.
c. 14:24 THE STORM AT SEA
to de PLOIon Ede staDIous polLOUS aPO tes ges ePEIchen,
But the boat was now many furlongs distant from the land,
ba-sa-niZOme-non [928] huPO ton kuMAton [2949]; en gar e-nanTIos [1727] ho Ane-mos.
distressed by the waves; for the wind was contrary.
d. 14:25 And in the fourth watch of the night he came unto them, walking upon the sea.

e. 14:26 THE DISCIPLES FEAR

And the disciples seeing him walking on the sea were troubled,
LEgon-tes [HOti] PHANtasMA [5326] es-tin; kai aPO tou PHObou Ekra-xan.
saying [that] It is a ghost; and cried out for :fear.
f. 14:27 But straightway :Jesus spoke to them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.

g. 14:28 And :Peter answered andsaid to him, Lord, if it be you, bid me come unto you upon the waters.

h. 14:29a And he said Come. ho de EIpen El-THE.
i. 14:29b And Peter went down from the boat, andwalked upon the waters and was coming to :Jesus.

j. 14:30 PETER'S LAPSE
BLEpon de ton Ane-mon, e-phoBEthe [5349]; kai arXAme-nos [756] ka-ta-ponTIzes-thai [2670],
But seeing the wind, he was afraid; and as he began to sink,
Ekra-xen, LEgon, KUri-e, SO-SON [4982] me.
he cried out, saying, Lord, save me.
k. 14:31 PETER SAVED AND CHIDED BY JESUS
euTHEos de ho IeSOUS ekTEInas [1614] ten CHEIra,
And straightway :Jesus stretched forth his:hand,
e-peLAbe-to [1949] auTOU, kai LEgei auTO, OliGOpi-ste [3640], eis ti eDIsta-sas [1365]?
andtook hold of him, and says to him, Youof little faith, why did you doubt?
l. 14:32 And when they were gone up into the boat, the wind ceased.

m. 14:33 And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, Truly you are God's Son.

4. 14:34-36 GENNESARET - A HEALING BY TOUCHING HIS GARMENT
a. 14:34 And they crossed over andcame to the land, unto Gennesaret.
Kai di-a-peRAsan-tes [1276]ELthan ePI ten gen, eis Gen-ne-saRET.
b. 14:35-36 TOTAL HEALINGS PERFORMED BY JESUS
kai e-pigNONtes [1921] auTON hoi ANdres tou TOpou eKEInou,
And when the men of that :place knew him,
aPEstei-lan eis HOlen ten peRIcho-ron [4066] eKEInen,
they sent into all that :region round about,
kai proSEneg-kan auTO PANtas tous kaKOS Echon-tas, kai pa-reKAloun [3870] auTON
and brought to him all the ailing, 36and besought him
HIna MOnon HApson-tai [680] tou krasPEdou [2899] tou hi-maTIou auTOU:
that they might only touch the border of his :garment:
kai HOsoi HEpsan-to di-eSOthe-san [1295].
and as many as touched were made whole.
NOTE: John the Baptist was a clearand faithfulpreacher. If kings sinned - which Herod did - John clearly rebuked him. Because of Herodias, his unlawful wife, John lost his life.
See also how lightly and foolishly kings and leaders make vows and oaths. Herod's pleasure in the dance of the daughter of Herodias - brought forth a foolish vow. Jethro, one of the Judges of Israel in the OT made a similar, foolish vow. By our wordswe are snared, wrote Solomon by the Holy Spirit in the Book of Proverbs. We need to pray like David, “Set a watch before my mouth, O Lord, that I might not sin against Thee.”
Jesus mourned over the loss of His cousin John. I wonder if He was thinking that soon like John, His life too would be taken from Him. One major difference however - Jesus as Son of man and Son of God, would be givingHis life freely for us as a ransom, that Redemption would come to us because of the free gift of His life for us!
See the compassionof Jesus. Though He had withdrawn to mourn the passing of John - yet the crowds would not let Him go, and followed Him. And yet -- seeing them as sheep without a shepherd, Jesus healed their sick, and miraculously fed 5000 men plus women and children. He would not have them leave fasting - after three days with Him. And we must remember that what we see Jesus do - is the very heartof our Father also!
Look at Peter joining Jesus walking on the water! And though by temporary lack of faith he started to sink - yet with Jesus he walked backto the boat! And see also the worship this act of Jesus brought forth from His disciples. - J.A.W.
